• Reginald Lee, 29, of East Orange, N.J., and Mark Toppin, 29, of Elizabeth, N.J., suffered a broken leg and other injuries when a Pennsylvania woman who had driven at least three miles the wrong way on Interstate 95 collided head-on with the in New Rochelle, NY. Tanisha Gomez, 26, of East Stroudsburg, Pa., was driving north when she crashed into the car carrying two New Jersey men.
• The two men were driving to their homes in New Jersey after visiting friends in Connecticut, according to state police Sgt. John Antonelli.Five people were injured in a car crash on southbound Route 222 in Lower Macungie Township when a car rear-ended Arline Fisher, 62, of Plainfield, N.J., who was preparing to make the left turn. She was hit from behind by a car driven by a 17-year-old Whitehall Township boy, according to state police.
• Madeline Rodriguez, 50, of Neptune City, NJ was charged with Vehicular Homicide in a motor vehicle collision, Prosecutor Peter E. Warshaw, Jr. announced. She allegedly struck and killed David Pisarchik, 49, of Wall Township, who was driving a motorcycle northbound on Route 35.
• No improvement is seen for the Zone of Death Exit in East Brunswick. Drivers should beware when they get off the New Jersey Turnpike at Exit 9 and try to make it down Route 18 north to the exit for Route 1 south.
• Chrystoph and Hlimas (Elias) Iliopoulos, ages 14 and 18, and their buddy Eric Colligan, 15, were killed in the crash on the Garden State Parkway.Dimitrios (Jimmy) Iliopoulos, 54, of Staten Island, is the injured driver. His wife and daughter remain in intensive care at Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune, NJ. State police have been unable to locate the driver of a black car that caused the crash.
"Eddie's Law," which is recently proposed legislation in the New Jersey Senate, would elevate destruction of evidence, tampering with evidence, or giving false information to the police after fleeing the scene of a fatal car accident to a higher third degree offense, with a potential prison term of three to five years and a fine of up to $10,000. The proposed changes to New Jersey hit-and-run laws are named after Edward Morrison, 36, who was found killed in 2010 by a car driven by Robert Eisele, Jr., who had fled the scene.
• John P. Heaney III was driving a truck in the wrong lane when he collided with a group of seven motorcyclists who were members of a veterans club. District Attorney John Morganelli said alcohol may have played a role in the crash that killed two motorcyclists and injured six others in Bangor, PA. Morganelli confirmed Heaney had crossed the center line when he collided head on with the bikers from the Last Chance Motorcycle Club, killing Keith Michaelson, 52, of West Milford, N.J., and Michael Zadoyko, 47, of Pompton Lakes, N.J.
• Accidental drowning was the second leading cause of death for New Jersey children ages 1-4 followed by homicide for children ages 10-14, according to the Children’s Safety Network (CSN) National Injury and Violence Prevention Resource Center.
• Red light cameras can actually increase the number of accidents at intersections. 16 municipalities in New Jersey have installed cameras to catch drivers. Statistics from municipalities that have had the cameras running the longest do not show any noticeable decline in accidents at those intersections — at least one intersection actually showed a slight increase in accidents.
• Thomas Donohue, 36, of Rahway was being treated for injuries to his right leg, left arm and shoulder at University Hospital in Newark after he was thrown off his motorcycle in a motor vehicle accident. Police said he was riding north on St. Geroges Avenue and was struck by the Chrysler 300 driven by Marie Wylie, 77, of Rahway.
• James Reilly, 31, of Far Hills burned to death in his car after it crashed on Route 287 in Bridgewater, according to police.He was driving a gray 2003 Chevy pickup truck when he lost control of the vehicle. Reilly’s truck ran into a guardrail, causing it flip over and stop under an overpass, where it caught fire.
• The New Jersey Supreme Court ruled that an injured vehicle driver may sue a restaurant or bar for damages even though the driver was convicted of or pled guilty to driving while intoxicated (DWI) in connection with the motor vehicle accident. Prior to the accident, a restaurant allegedly served the visibly-intoxicated driver alcoholic beverages. Plaintiff Frederick Voss was injured when his motorcycle collided with a vehicle operated by defendant Kristoffe Tranquilino.
• "Significant numbers" of New Jersey drivers are failing to have safety inspections performed according to a new survey. Drivers are putting off mechanical repairs previously needed to pass the state's safety inspection. Bad tires and faulty brakes are the biggest safety concerns and could lead to an accident.
• Jonathan Morgan, 24, of Willingboro, a reputed member of the Bloods street gang is in custody after being charged in the September 2010 shooting death of a city taxi driver, Isidro Leonardo, 44, of Plainfield.
• A report on the 2010 “Click it or Ticket” seat-belt campaign showed that almost 94 percent of drivers and front-seat passengers fastened their seat belts in 2010. But compliance with the law by back-seat passengers was ibkt 27 percent. As state, county sheriffs and local police are in the midst of enforcement of the two-week 2011 “Click it or Ticket” campaign, a report on last year’s effort showed that 35,671 summons were issued to unbelted passengers and drivers by 406 participating police departments statewide.
• The 15th Annual Florham Park Jaycees 5K Race was held June 11, 2011, to raise money for the Billy and Ashley Streiter Memorial Scholarship Fund. The event is in memory of the Florham Park siblings who were tragically killed in a traffic accident April 5, 2003, on the Garden State Parkway in Union County when a drunk driver slammed his vehicle into their disabled car.
• Amie Marrocelli, 38, of Union Township was indicted in June 2011 on a vehicular homicide charge in connection with a high–speed crash in October that killed Steven Wall of Clinton Township, according to a county prosecutor. Authorities said Marrocelli was driving home from a wedding, where she had consumed alcohol, when the fatal crash occurred on Oct. 10. Marrocelli was driving east on the I-78 when she quickly entered the center lane, causing her 2011 BMW to collide with Wall’s 1998 Subaru.
• Antonio Danna, 43, of Raritan, was killed in a collision near Route 202 in Bridgewater when another motorist collided with his motorcycle as he waited to get on Route 202, police said. The driver of a 2008 Porsche Cayenne, a 20-year-old Branchburg woman, was not seriously injured.
• Robert Warner, 24, of Philadelphia, was killed and another charged with DUI in a single-car crash on the New Jersey Turnpike in Elizabeth early today, after their car ricocheted back and forth across the highway on its roof, State Police said. Warner was declared dead at the scene after sustaining head injuries, Castellanos said. Neither Warner nor the driver, Paul Gavin of Williamstown, was wearing a seat belt, Castellanos said.
• The driver of a car who burned to death in his car after it crashed on Route 287 was identified as James Reilly, 31, of Far Hills, according to police. He was driving a gray 2003 Chevy pickup truck near mile marker 17 in Bridgewater when he lost control of the vehicle. Reilly’s truck ran into a guardrail, causing it flip over and stop under an overpass, where it caught fire. He was trapped in the vehicle as firefighters tried to extinguish the heavy flames.
• Hillside officials will renew their efforts to get flashing signals installed ahead of a dangerous S-shaped curve on both sides of Route 22, following an accident that killed three people in April 2011. It was the second fatal accident on that stretch of road in the past two weeks, and the 11th since 1999, according to State Police records.
